NhRP Interview Series

By Mickey Suzuki

Thanks again to everyone who participated in our April Speaker Series! You can access all five video recordings via this YouTube playlist. We invite you to join us again, starting this Wednesday, for our new Interview Series!

For the next four Wednesdays at 11 a.m. PT/2 p.m. ET, NhRP staff will interview friends of the NhRP who’ve lent their expertise in support of our groundbreaking nonhuman animal rights cases. We’ll discuss their work, how it relates to the NhRP’s mission, and more.

Please see the schedule and join us using the Zoom meeting details below:

May 20th: Justin Marceau is a Professor of Law at the University of Denver’s Sturm College of Law who has submitted amicus briefs in support of writs of habeas corpus for our clients. He is the author of Beyond Cages: Animal Law and Criminal Punishment, which we recently interviewed him about for our blog. Watch the video recording here.

May 27th: Letitia Meynell is an associate professor of philosophy at Dalhousie University and one of a group of philosophers who submitted amicus briefs in support of our clients’ legal personhood and rights. The first of these has been extended into a short book, Chimpanzee Rights: The Philosophers’ Brief (2019). Her research explores the epistemology of images in science and various intersections between feminist theory and contemporary trends in biology. Her current work also engages models of evolution and scientifically-informed analyses of the moral and legal status of nonhuman animals. Read the philosophers’ latest amicus brief (in support of elephants’ personhood and rights) here. Watch the video recording here.

June 3rd: Debbie Ethell is the Executive Director of the KOTA Foundation for Elephants and a conservation research scientist who has served as a consultant on our elephant rights cases. Her memoir The Will of Heaven tells the story of how her lifelong passion for helping elephants helped her overcome a debilitating addiction. Watch the video recording here.

June 10th: Lori Marino is a neuroscientist and an expert on the evolution of the brain and intelligence in dolphins and whales. The NhRP’s Science Director leading up to the filing of our first lawsuits, she is the founder and executive director of the Kimmela Center for Animal Advocacy and the Whale Sanctuary Project.
