Preliminary Conference in “Happy” Elephant Rights Case

By Lauren Choplin

Today the NhRP and attorneys for the Wildlife Conservation Society (which operates the Bronx Zoo, where our elephant client Happy is imprisoned) participated in a preliminary conference in the Bronx County Supreme Court. At the hearing, it was determined that all pending motions will be argued directly before Justice Alison Y. Tuitt on September 23rd. Also today, the NhRP served WCS with a Supplemental Memorandum of Law Upon Transfer.

As Kevin says, our hearing today was one more step in the process of freeing Happy to a sanctuary and winning the first actual legal rights for nonhuman animals in the US.

Stay tuned for details regarding the September hearing!
