Take action for Minnie

By Courtney Fern on August 6, 2020
Share this story:

Last week we let you know that we sent letters to local, state, and federal agencies urging them to immediately investigate what the Commerford Zoo has publicly acknowledged is its inability to provide basic care to our elephant client Minnie as a result of the COVID-19 lockdowns.

We need your help to ensure that the agencies conduct an emergency welfare check on Minnie. Please complete the below actions to urge Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) and the other agencies that have oversight over the Commerford Zoo to conduct an emergency inspection of their facility and remove Minnie if she is in immediate danger:

  1. Complete this action alert urging the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) to conduct an emergency welfare check on Minnie.
  2. Tweet at the USDA and DEEP asking them to conduct a welfare check on Minnie. Here is a sample tweet you can copy and paste: URGENT: @USDA_APHIS, @USDA, @CTDEEPNews, please conduct an emergency welfare check on elephant Minnie at the Commerford Zoo. The zoo claims it can no longer afford Minnie’s food and veterinary care. More info can be found here: https://tinyurl.com/helpminnie #FreeMinnie
  3. Share the action alert on social media so more people can take action for Minnie.

Thank you.
