We’re excited to kick off one of our largest and most impactful fundraising events of the year—the Nonhuman Rights Project’s Giving Tuesday campaign! Whether you’re a seasoned fundraiser or a first-timer, we can’t do this without you.

By becoming a Nonhuman Rights Project (NhRP) fundraising partner, you’re joining a donor community that believes in justice, compassion, and action for those who are suffering because they lack legal rights. Ready to make history and support a powerful movement? Let’s get started!

But wait … what does Giving Tuesday mean to the NhRP?
Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving, and for the NhRP, it’s an opportunity to team up with like-minded individuals to raise funds to give nonhuman animals access to justice. This isn’t just about meeting fundraising goals—it’s about creating a movement, overcoming obstacles, and ensuring nonhuman beings are treated with the respect they deserve.

Sounds amazing! How can I help?

It’s simple! Click here to set up your unique fundraising page, and start spreading the word. You can fundraise solo or build a team of friends and family! Share your page and tell people why fighting for animal rights matters to you.

Why participate?

This year, the NhRP made significant strides in our mission–raising public awareness of the need and basis for legal rights for nonhuman animals, pursuing groundbreaking court cases, and educating diverse audiences on chimpanzee and elephant autonomy. Your support is vital in helping us continue and grow this essential and unique work.

What is the Nonhuman Rights Project?

The Nonhuman Rights Project (NhRP) is a civil rights organization working through litigation, legislation, and education to secure legal rights for nonhuman animals. Here’s a quick look at some of our progress:

  •  Courtroom firsts: The NhRP has secured the world’s first habeas corpus hearings demanding an end to the imprisonment of autonomous nonhuman animals and recognition of their right to liberty. These hearings–and the words of judges who have begun to support the cause of chimpanzee and elephant freedom–are giving nonhuman animals a voice in court in an unprecedented way. Donations help fund existing litigation and allow the NhRP to take on new clients.
  • Historic legislation: The NhRP helped develop and pass the first animal rights legislation in the US–an ordinance in Ojai, California, that protects elephants’ right to liberty. Donations help us work with elected officials on trailblazing legislation and build grassroots support.
  • Raising awareness on a global scale: Each year the NhRP reaches millions of people around the world with the stories of our clients and why we’re fighting for their legal rights. Donations help us reach new audiences and deepen our impact.
  • Awareness and Support: We work to educate the public and policymakers about the importance of recognizing animals’ inherent rights to freedom and protection.

The NhRP is a leading force in the animal rights movement, and we need supporters like you to help us continue advancing this cause.

Tips for Setting Up Your Fundraising Page

  • Add a Photo: Personalize your page with a picture of yourself or an animal you love. Check out our photo library here!
  • Set a Goal: Choose a goal that feels both ambitious and achievable. By default, FundraiseUp sets it to $500, but feel free to adjust this.
  • Share Your Story: Under “Your message,” write why animal rights and the work of the NhRP matter to you. Sharing your personal connection with the cause can inspire others to support the NhRP.

Setting and Reaching Your Fundraising Goals

  • Set an Achievable, Inspiring Goal: Aim for a meaningful goal that’s both challenging and realistic. If you have a smaller network, you might set a goal of $200-$500. For a larger network, aim for $1,000 or more. Setting a specific target can motivate both you and your donors.
  • Define a Donor Count Goal: In addition to a fundraising amount, set a goal for the number of people who donate. For instance, aim to get 15 people to contribute $10 or 10 new donors who have never supported NhRP. This can bring more people into the movement.

How do I Fundraise?

Whether you’re a first-time fundraiser or a seasoned pro, asking for donations can feel intimidating. But it doesn’t have to be! As long as you’re open to having meaningful conversations with your network, asking for support can be easy and even enjoyable.

How many times should I ask people for a donation?
Three times is a good number to aim for–and maybe even four! If someone showed interest but hasn’t donated yet, a soft reminder is okay. For example, if you’re sending an email asking how they’re doing, include in the P.S. a link to your fundraising page with a simple note like, “Also, here’s my donation link for Giving Tuesday if you’d like to support a cause that’s important to me!”

What’s the best way to use social media?
When posting, explain why you’re participating in Giving Tuesday with the NhRP and include your donation link. Personal stories and connections are powerful motivators, so share why the NhRP’s mission matters to you and how the NhRP is making a difference.

On social media, asking for smaller amounts (like $20) can make donating feel more approachable. Many people will often give more once they’re on the donation page, but a smaller ask gets the conversation started.

How do I approach people if I’m not sure they support animal rights?
Approach people in a variety of ways! Most people care about animals on some level and might not be aware of the NhRP’s work, why it matters, and how nonhuman animals like the NhRP’s elephant and chimpanzee clients suffer when deprived of their freedom. Mention how the NhRP is working to end the captivity of elephants and chimpanzees and show that no animal should be denied justice simply because they’re not human. Look for an opportunity to start the conversation, then simply ask for their support.

Here are some effective fundraising strategies you can use:

  • Start with Your Own Gift: Show your commitment by making the first donation yourself. It’s a great way to kickstart your campaign and encourage others to join.
  • Make it Personal: Reach out directly to friends, family, and colleagues. Explain why animal rights matter to you and how their support can make a difference.
  • Spread the Word: Share your fundraising link widely—ask not only friends and family but consider local connections, such as your veterinarian, yoga instructor, or favorite coffee shop owner.
  • Host an Event: Organize a gathering to raise funds. It could be a game night, a wine-tasting, an animal-themed trivia night, or even a “Friendsgiving” or holiday gathering.
  • Celebrate Special Occasions: If you have a birthday or holiday coming up, ask for donations to the NhRP in place of gifts.
  • Offer Talents or Services: If you’re an artist, writer, or have unique skills, offer them as thank-yous for larger donations.
  • Send Reminders: Follow up with 2-3 reminders before Giving Tuesday to keep your cause top of mind.
  • Thank Your Supporters: Show appreciation with a thank-you note, text, or postcard.
